About

Our History
In 1962, the southern end of the Sandy Hook peninsula opened for public bathing as a New Jersey State Park. In 1974, Sandy Hook became part of Gateway National Recreation Area within the National Park Service. As Fort Hancock was deactivated, the park grew to its present size, which includes seven miles of ocean beaches. Sandy Hook is one of the most visited National Parks, welcoming over two million visitors each year. The majority of visitors patronize the five guarded bathing beaches that cover about two miles of oceanfront.
As lifeguards, we take great pride in our responsibility to keep these visitors safe.
