When can we apply?
-
The application goes live around January of each year on USAJobs.gov. Even though the official deadline is set for June, please apply ASAP. It is notoriously difficult to ensure that applications pass through each step of the government background process, so be sure to stay on top of your application and respond to any emails you receive throughout the process.

How do I write a USA Jobs resume?
-
The application creates a resume out of the experiences you enter, and it should look slightly different than the format of a normal resume. Visit this page to learn more about resume guidelines. If you have questions about how to add experiences or what types of experience to include, please reach out to Captain Tom McLoughlin or sandyhooklifeguards@gmail.com for a resume review.

How old do I have to be to work at Sandy Hook?
-
All staff members are required to be 16 years old on the day they begin work. If you turn 16 over the summer, do not hesitate to apply now as a 15 year old! We understand that this might be your first job, and many of us who began working at the Hook at 16 years old can attest to the benefits of working here from such a young age. We are eager to help you work through the application process to ensure that you have the same opportunity!

How do I know for which position I qualify?
-
Visit this page for more in-depth guidelines about qualifications for government positions. In general, we recommend any applicants with little to no previous lifeguarding experience to apply for a GS-3 position, which is the entry-level role (Recreation Aid). If you have some lifeguarding experience (3+ years), consider applying to the GS-4 position. We cannot guarantee that these years of experience will translate into the GS-4 position, but the required transcript can benefit applicants who might qualify with educational experience if they do not qualify with professional experience. We are happy to review your resume to determine which role seems best for you. Please email thomas_mcloughlin@nps.gov with questions about qualifications.
